Why You Need a Pair of Work Boots?

Are you wearing your protective footwear the right way? Do you know how should steel toe boots fit? This blog covers the reasons you need to wear steel toes shoes, how should steel toe boots fit, and how to break in new steel toe shoes in the workplace. I know a guy, and you may know a guy like him too. We’ll call him “Fred”. Fred works for a company that requires personal protective equipment (PPE).  Fred’s company follows the OSHA guidelines and makes sure that all employees wear protective equipment for eyes, face, head and extremities, which include Fred’s feet. At orientation Fred was told that he had to wear PPE at all times while in the yard, and that meant Fred had to wear steel toe boots at work. Unfortunately, Fred, didn’t have steel toe boots when he started this job; he had shoes that looked like steel toe shoes. You see, Fred decided to save money and buy boots that looked like they had a reinforced toe, but they didn’t. So when Fred dropped a 2 pound hammer on his foot. Instead of telling someone at the front office he was hurt, he worked through the pain. Had Fred been wearing the boots with a reinforced, protective toe he was required to wear, his toes would have been safe.  Don’t be like Fred, read on to learn how to protect your feet by wearing protective footwear.

How Do Safety Toe Shoes Work?

Safety toe footwear helps protect your toes from being either pierced or crushed while on the job. A safety toe box is placed inside the toe area of the shoe to provide protection. This footwear is designed to ASTM International standards to protect against impact and compression.

Composite Toe or Steel Toe Safety Shoes?

There are two main types of safety toe shoes: steel toe shoes and composite toe shoes, not to mention alloy toe shoes.

Steel Toe Safety Shoes:
Built with heavy-duty steel toe caps to protect your toes. Steel toe shoes are the old-school standard, and some job sites specifically require steel toe shoes (so check with your supervisor). We especially recommend steel toe shoes for:

  • Job sites requiring steel toe shoes
  • Use in hazardous conditions with a higher likelihood of falling debris/objects or heavy impacts

Composite Toe Safety Shoes:
Built from non-metal composite materials that usually include some combination of carbon fiber, Kevlar, plastic, and/or fiberglass. The non-metal designer steel toe shoes makes them ideal for certain working conditions. While composite safety toe shoes are an excellent and popular option, composite toes could be compromised if they receive a direct, significant impact (resulting in fractures in the toe box composition) and should therefore be replaced. We particularly recommend composite toe shoes for:

  • Jobs with metal detectors(airports, other security/tactical work)
  • Jobs in extremely hot or cold weather

Alloy Toe Shoes are a lightweight, light-duty configuration of different kinds of metals. They tend to be pricier and there aren’t as many on the market, but they meet ASTM safety standards just like steel toes and composite toes.
